Ellen's gift guide - continued again

I am always making an effort to try and not buy things with Amazon but I redoubled my efforts once I saw the $500 million boat. Imagine what someone with a soul could do with $500 million? Here are some fun places to do mail order gifts: I also like Harry & David because I love pears and cheese.

Li-lac Chocolates - Manhattan’s oldest chocolatier

Zabar’s - This is a place to get food on the Upper Best, sorry, I mean Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, which is where your girl here grew up. I can close my eyes and smell it right now, walking from the cheese section, turning right, heading towards all the prepared foods down where the strudels and the knishes are…and then if go upstairs, you'll find every possible cooking apparatus known to man. I have spent many hours here.

I know this isn’t new information, but I like talking about New York. Sue me.

Speaking of NYC, Nobody Told Me is almost six years old I think? Such a great bar on the Upper West Side, and the jerk wings…oh man. I guess some people might call it Morningside Heights? Or something else, I dunno.

Here is the ATM that stole $20 from me on Avenue A a couple weeks ago. Are we surprised?

Ellen's annual gift guide continued

Here is a “gift” you should do today: Open a 529 Account for your kid or any other kid in your life like a nephew or God child. You can be really aggressive and where are you put the money.

Here is a “gift” you should do today: Open a 529 Account for your kid or any other kid in your life like a nephew or God child. You can be really aggressive and where are you put the money. And then when you're picking the phones, you can choose higher risk funds because the money is going to be used sooner than retirement! And then, if it isn't, like these rabbity kids decide not to go to school they can eventually roll the 529 into a Roth IRA down the road which is great.

I opened a 529 for my son in New York when he was born because that is where we lived, but all states have them, except for Wyoming I think? Not sure. But even if you live in Wyoming, I'm pretty sure that you could open a 529 account in New York. Let me tell you the returns that I got in the past year on the account for my son were bonkers. I wish all of my retirement funds were in there. Once you open the account, you can send a cute little email to all the grandparents with a link to donate money to this account so that your little darling can go to college instead of buying them more plastic crap they don't need for their birthday or Valentine's Day or Easter blah blah blah.

And then, bad news. There is a reason every woman my age (read: YOUNG) has or used to have or always wanted these boots from No.6. They are fabulous. The kind of thing you buy knowing they will be with you through several apartments, perhaps even a couple relationships? I left mine in my car last night and then rather than wear another pair of shoes to go meet a friend I ran like a crazy person in a pair of flip-flops in 20° weather to fetch them. When people say “like a crazy person”, is that is sort of admitting that you're the crazy person? I mean, I guess I'm OK with that. I grew up in Manhattan, so I've always been the kind of girl who had flip-flops in my bag for the way home if I was wearing heels to go out. I think that’s just being prepared, like a war photographer in the jungle. I never knew how far a field I was going to end up.
